Plateau Villa is a detached house situated in the rolling landscape of the Flemish Ardennes. The design starts from a simple stacking of two volumes. The concrete base protects the house from the high water load present on the site and integrates it into the natural environment with a minimal footprint. The house itself, an abstract black volume, is thus effectively detached from the plot in an attempt to survey the landscape and to establish its own unique position within it.
The rational organization of the house is reflected in both the floor plan and the facade. Living and dining areas are arranged centrally along the axis of the house, bringing in both light and views through large sliding windows. The large windows also provide access to the terraces at both ends of the house. The central space is flanked by a series of freely configurable rooms. The house uniquely combines the openness of a loft with the privacy of a room apartment. The project began with the question: how can one live contemporary life in a detached villa? This search gave rise to a unique residential concept in which architecture takes a distinct stance vis-à-vis its context, a boundary zone between landscape and parcelization, while also offering a relaxed freedom to the residents' lifestyle. By raising the house, this project aims to question the existence of the property boundary and the need for (maintaining) a private garden.
