Virgo Maria, Pre-school and Primary School, located along the Runcvoortpark in Merksem, is undergoing a carefully coordinated renovation based on a development vision by Generiek, developed in close dialogue with the city architect, the quality department, and the school board. The vision combines two priority interventions into a single, cohesive project: a new Gatehouse on Terlindenhofstraat and the renovation of the distinctive Block B with its striking gable roof. The Gatehouse gives the school a bright and inviting appearance, forms the link between the primary and secondary schools, and makes the campus legible and accessible. It serves as a connecting space for the school and the neighborhood, with green play areas open to the public after school hours, sheltered seating in the plinth, and flexible landscaped classrooms on the upper levels. The covered outdoor gallery connects the interior and exterior, creating additional space for learning and play.

Block B is being restored to its former glory while simultaneously being made more sustainable: the exposed trusses in the attic classrooms enhance the historical character and give the spaces an authentic identity. Simultaneously, the roof will be renovated for energy efficiency, new technologies will be installed, and improved natural light, combined with optimized circulation, will ensure contemporary comfort and optimal educational quality. The former paved play area will be transformed into a climate-resilient natural playground, where play opportunities, adventure, robust greenery, and low-maintenance paving will converge, with a focus on biodiversity and nature integration.
